Metal or wooden pergola: how to choose for the Caribbean

Wood has a warmth that is hard to match; metal, a toughness that is hard to match in a climate of sun, rain, humidity and salt air. This guide compares the two options for a Caribbean terrace, and explains how to combine them when you want the best of both.

The climate decides

In the Caribbean a pergola lives in the sun all year, takes heavy rain and, near the sea, salt air. Outdoor wood needs regular treatment and sealing so it does not crack, warp or suffer from pests. Metal does not rot and pests do not attack it, but it needs good paint and rust checks, especially on the bolts.

Assembly

Our metal pergolas are bolted: they arrive in pieces cut and painted in the plant and are assembled on your terrace with bolts, with no welding on site. In a lived-in house, a restaurant or a hotel in operation, that means quick, clean and quiet mounting.

Design

Metal allows slim louvres and longer spans with fewer columns, and it is painted in the colour you choose. It can be finished with perimeter lighting, cut-pattern side panels or a sliding glass enclosure. Before fabrication, we show you the pergola in 3D on your own terrace.

The best of both

If you like the warmth of wood, the two can be combined: a metal frame and louvres with a wooden screen on one side, as in one of our pergola ideas. Metal handles the structure that must hold up; wood adds the detail that is touched and seen up close, and is easy to replace if needed.

Maintenance

The Coast Plan checks rust and salt corrosion, touches up paint and anchors, re-tightens the bolts and delivers a photo report. Every pergola carries its QR-code plate, with its warranty and maintenance history.

Frequently asked questions

Which lasts longer on the coast?

Metal does not rot and pests do not attack it; with paint and rust checks, it handles the coastal climate well.

Can metal and wood be combined?

Yes. A metal frame and louvres with a wooden screen, for example.

Is there welding at my house?

No. Our pergolas are assembled with bolts, with no welding on site.
